Dental notation systems (overview)

Dentists all over the world use dental notation systems (teeth numbering systems) to identify the teeth of their patients, and to create descriptions and write down information about a specific tooth.

There are several dental notation systems used worldwide. The most common internationally used system is the ISO-3950 systemBesides the ISO system, there are several more. The best known and most widely used are two more systems, named:

The Universal Tooth Numbering System is primarily used in the USA, while the Palmer notation system is used in the UK.
