Dentists all over the world use dental notation systems (teeth numbering systems) to identify the teeth of their patients, and to create descriptions and write down information about a specific tooth.

There are several dental notation systems used worldwide. The most common internationally used system is the ISO-3950 system. Besides the ISO system, there are several more. The best known and most widely used are two more systems, named:

• Universal Tooth Numbering System

• Palmer notation system

The Universal Tooth Numbering System is primarily used in the USA, while the Palmer notation system is used in the UK.
