Maxillary molars

In total, there are six maxillary molars in the oral cavity. Every side of the upper row has three molars, so three are on the right and three on the left side of the upper jaw.

As mentioned in the previous slide, the main functions of these teeth are food crushing and grinding

The maxillary molars have a large occlusal surface, which is also one of the characteristics of these teeth.

The occlusal surface usually contains 5 cusps, but only 3 or 4 cusps can also be present.

The 1st maxillary molars have the following numbers according to different numbering systems:

The numbers of the 2nd maxillary molars are as follows:

  • 2 and 15 (Universal Tooth Numbering System)

  • 17 and 27 (ISO system)

  • 7 ┘ and 7└ (Palmer system)

The numbers of the 3rd maxillary molars are:

  • 1 and 16 (Universal Tooth Numbering System)

  • 18 and 28 (ISO system)

  • 8 ┘ and 8└ (Palmer system)

NOTE: the 3D model lacks the third maxillary molars.
