Pelvic floor components

The main structures forming the pelvic floor are the following:

  • Levator ani muslces - the most prominent component consisting of three muscles (puborectalis, pubococcygeus, iliococcygeus);

  • Coccygeus muscle - it is also called the ischiococcygeus muscle; posterior, smaller component;

  • Connective tissue structures, including fasciae that cover the pelvic floor muscles.
